Tip #4 brings us to the crucial topic of maintenance: regular, gentle cleaning is essential for extending the life of your jewelry and keeping it looking brand new. Over time, your rings and necklaces accumulate a film of hand lotion, soap scum, dead skin cells, and environmental dust. This buildup acts like a magnet, trapping more dirt and severely dulling the brilliance of your gemstones and the shine of your metals.
For most standard metal and hard gemstone jewelry, you do not need expensive or harsh chemicals to restore their sparkle. A soft-bristle toothbrush (like a baby's toothbrush), a few drops of mild dish soap, and warm water are all you need to gently scrub away daily grime. The soft bristles can reach into the tiny crevices of intricate settings without scratching the metal or the stones.
However, it is absolutely crucial to avoid harsh scrubbers, abrasive toothpaste, or at-home ultrasonic cleaners if you are dealing with delicate or porous stones. Pearls, opals, emeralds, and turquoise are highly sensitive and can be permanently damaged or cracked by ultrasonic vibrations or harsh chemicals.
After cleaning your pieces, always ensure you dry them thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Moisture trapped in intricate settings or behind gemstones can lead to corrosion or discoloration over time. While at-home cleaning is fantastic for maintaining a daily shine, we also highly recommend taking your most precious pieces to a professional jeweler for a deep, ultrasonic clean and a polish once or twice a year to truly restore their original luster.
