Day 7: Tip #5 — Keep It Dry

Day 7: Tip #5 — Keep It Dry

Water and Soap Residue Dull Your Jewelry Fast

We have all been guilty of jumping into the shower without taking off our necklaces, earrings, or rings, but Tip #5 warns strongly against this habit: water and soap residue dull your jewelry incredibly fast. It might seem harmless, or even like you are cleaning your jewelry while you wash yourself, but the reality is quite the opposite.

When you bathe with your jewelry on, soap scum from your body wash, shampoo, and conditioner builds up rapidly in the tiny crevices of prong settings and behind your gemstones. This thick, cloudy film completely blocks light from entering and exiting the stone, instantly dimming the brilliance of your diamonds and colored gems. Furthermore, the hot water from a typical shower can actually loosen the specialized adhesives used in certain types of vintage or fashion jewelry settings, causing stones to fall out unexpectedly.

Beyond the shower, exposing your jewelry to chlorinated pool water and saltwater from the ocean is highly destructive. These harsh environments accelerate metal corrosion, pitting the surface of your gold and silver. They can also weaken the structural integrity of clasps, hinges, and prongs, making your pieces far more likely to break or fail. Even the steam from a hot shower causes rapid tarnishing on silver and brass jewelry. To keep your pieces sparkling and structurally sound, always remove them before entering the water and hang them up safely in a dry room.
