Chemicals are your jewelry's absolute worst enemy, and they are everywhere in our daily routines. Many people do not realize that the products they use to keep their homes and bodies clean are actively destroying their fine jewelry.

Household cleaners containing bleach, ammonia, or chlorine are incredibly harsh. If you are scrubbing the bathtub or doing laundry with your rings on, these chemicals can severely corrode metal settings. They actually eat away at the alloys mixed with your gold, causing the metal to become pitted, brittle, and discolored. They will also instantly dull the finish of your gemstones, stripping away their natural brilliance.

Similarly, the chlorine found in swimming pools and hot tubs is highly destructive. Chlorine weakens gold alloys, leading to a dangerous phenomenon known as stress corrosion cracking. A ring exposed to a hot tub can literally crack and break apart due to chemical stress.

The golden rule to protect your collection from chemical damage is simple to remember: your jewelry should be the last thing you put on before leaving the house and the first thing you take off when you return. Apply your lotions, spray your perfume, let them dry completely, and only then put on your jewelry.
