Top 10 Ways to Prevent Wear on Your Jewelry: A 12-Day Series (Part 2)
Day 5: Tip #3 — The Art of Safe Storage
Proper Storage Prevents Scratches and Tangles
How you store your jewelry when you are not wearing it is just as important as how you treat it when you are wearing it. Tip #3 is all about proper storage to prevent scratches, tangles, and unnecessary damage. Many people simply toss their rings, necklaces, and earrings into a single drawer, a small dish on the dresser, or a disorganized jewelry box at the end of a long day. This habit is a recipe for disaster.
Tossing all your pieces together in a single pile guarantees they will rub against each other. Harder stones, like diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, are incredibly durable and will easily scratch softer stones like pearls, opals, or emeralds. Furthermore, the sharp edges of diamond facets will quickly carve deep scratches into softer metals like gold and silver. A tangled mess of necklaces not only risks breaking delicate chains when you try to pull them apart, but the friction of the metal links rubbing together also causes significant wear over time.
To prevent this, you must store each piece separately. Use soft pouches, individual lined compartments within a high-quality jewelry box, or small ziplock bags to keep your collection safe. A soft, fabric-lined environment is ideal because it prevents any hard surfaces from contacting the metal or stones.
For your silver pieces, storage is even more critical. Silver oxidizes and tarnishes when exposed to air and moisture. Consider using specialized anti-tarnish bags or storing your silver wrapped in anti-tarnish cloth, which chemically slows down the oxidation process. Additionally, keeping your storage area at a low humidity level will significantly reduce the rate at which your metals tarnish. Separate storage truly means a longer, more beautiful life for your collection.
