Day 3: Tip #1 — Protect Your Pieces During Physical Activity Take It Off Before You Work Out or Do Chores Welcome to Tip #1 in our jewelry care series: Take it off before you work out or do chores! It might seem incredibly convenient to leave your wedding band on at the gym or while tackling weekend gardening projects, but physical activity is actually one of the primary causes of severe jewelry damage. When you are lifting weights or using exercise machines, gripping heavy metal gym equipment puts immense, direct pressure on the soft metals of your rings. Gold and silver are relatively malleable; under the force of a heavy dumbbell, a circular ring can easily bend, warp, or deform entirely out of shape. This warping not only ruins the look of the ring but also severely compromises the integrity of the settings holding your diamonds or gemstones, making them highly likely to pop out. Furthermore, the gym equipment itself is highly abrasive. The knurling on a barbell acts like sandpaper against your precious metals, creating deep scratches in seconds that would take years to accumulate through normal wear. Beyond the physical impact, sweat is a major factor. Human sweat contains salts and acids that accelerate the tarnishing process, particularly on silver and copper-based alloys. A simple, non-negotiable rule of thumb to remember: if your hands are working hard, your rings should be safely stored away. Create a safe, consistent habit of leaving your rings in a designated jewelry box or a soft pouch in your gym bag before you start your workout or yard work. Never put them in your pocket where they can fall out, and never leave them on the edge of a sink where they can be knocked down a drain. Protect your pieces, and they will shine for decades.
